Born in the eighteenth century, James "Gentleman Jim" Craddock earned a reputation as a dangerous highwayman in England. One day, he made a deal with an evil demon named Astaroth: If he could steal ten souls, then Astaroth would make him immortal. Using an enchanted cane, Craddock began to steal the souls of beautiful women, as well as framing Jason Blood, the mortal vessel for the demon Etrigan. These crimes caught the attention of Sherlock Holmes, who used one of Blood's spells to bring Batman to Victorian London to clear Blood's name. Upon Astaroth's defeat, Craddock was sentenced to hang; but before Astaroth was defeated, he gave Craddock the power of immortality. As per Batman and Blood's unheeded warnings, Astaroth's creed that Craddock's soul would never pass on was -not- the inability to die, but doomed his spirit to remain on Earth forever never able to enter the afterlife. Therefore, when Craddock died, his spirit rose from the grave, vowing revenge on Batman. Over the years, Gentleman Ghost has become a nemesis of Hawkman and, of course, Batman. After this he wandered as a ghost until the 21st century where battled Batman many times over the years but every time Batman found a way to best the Gentleman Ghost whose thirst for revenge against the city kept him alive.
