When the Madniks were exposed to the subatomic structure of the Quark Pistol, their DNA was changed. Unaware of it, they were defeated by Booster Gold and Blue Beetle. During a jailbreak, one of the Madniks touched an electric fence and started the group's mutation into giant Energy Monsters. They consume any power source and turns it into mass, becoming larger and stronger. The Energy Monsters then headed to northwest to the Hub City Nuclear Reactor. In a hypertimeline, they succeeded in draining its power and went from city to city ravaging resources. However, a time traveling Batman, Booster Gold, and Skeets teamed up with Blue Beetle Ted Kord. After readjusting the energy output of the BB Gun, then broadcasting the signal through Booster Gold's force field generator, and channeling it from the nuclear reactor; the Energy Monsters were turned back into the Madniks.
